Chapter Fourteen
As she drove through town, her thoughts were in a whirl. How was it possible that Nettie and Lindyâs masher was also a problem from Camiâs past? What did any of it have to do with a second story man? Was Bernetta a victim of theft simply because of her association with Cami? It was all too mind boggling. And however was she to make sense of it all? She was certainly no expert on the subject of thievery.
âHa!â It was with relief when she realized she had the resource readily at hand. While it was true that her own knowledge of second story men, kiss burglars, and the like was slim, she certainly knew of someone with a background in criminal justice to educate her on the subject.
Content that she would soon have some answers from the one man who could help her, she turned her attention to a related pressing matter. It was no longer possible to deny the truth. She was absolutely starving! Goldie pondered the possibilities as she took a turn a little too fast.
The very moment she rounded the corner, multiple things happened. All of them were bad. A mule pulling a wagon bolted causing confusion for everyone nearby. Pedestrians scattered in all directions. The traffic policeman at the far corner began moving toward the current fiasco with a look of utter dismay on his face as he frantically blew his whistle. And she spotted both her father and Irene Winslow walking away in separate directions.
Goldie pulled hard on her steering wheel to extract herself from the melee. Within moments she realized with a pleasant surprise that she was in a parking berth very near the delicatessen she hoped to sample. She crossed to the entrance with delectable thoughts in her head as the policemanâs whistle continued to screech through the air. All the while, she wondered what her father and Irene were doing in the neighborhood.
Inside the delicatessen, she forgot everything else while gazing upon the tempting options. After moving slowly along one side of the glass display case, Goldie waited patiently for the sandwiches to be assembled. By the time she reached her coupe once again, calm was returned to the street. She had no trouble darting into the traffic just in time to avoid being caught behind the trolley.
When she reached her destination, she left her car near the paddock as she carried the sandwiches into the barn where she found Harlow bent over a saddle. The scent of leather conditioner wafted up to her nose but wasnât strong enough to combat the wonderful smell of the sandwiches.
âI took a chance that you havenât eaten yet either.â Goldie passed a paper-wrapped sandwich to the former yegg.
âThanks.â Harlow set the soft rag aside to reach eagerly for the offering. âWhat brings you here?â
âI need to ask some more questions.â Goldie unwrapped her sandwich.
âIs this about the second story man that robbed a house under your boyfriendâs nose?â Harlowâs eyes were full of humor as he took a bite.
